caped crusaders

first things first, the real reason i am writing this quick little blog post is to tell say "bon voyage!" i'm taking off right after i finish this post to visit my family in southern california for thanksgiving. all i can think about is the delicious spread with turkey and cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, and stuffing! i will most definitely be wearing a loose-fitting dress for the occasion.

in fact, the chilly weather combined with all of these gluttonous holidays has got me wishing for a cape right about now. i've basically been hanging around the house with a blanket across my shoulders most days. i probably wouldn't mind if someone got me a snuggie for christmas. but seriously, how perfectly chic are these capes? just a bit of inspiration i've been running across over the past few weeks.

enjoy! (and i promise to put up all the photo credits complete with links later on tonight.) now i must be off!

bay area style bloggers

so we had a little style blogger meet-up on sunday! we met at the yerba buena gardens, but it was quite a chilly day, so we headed over to the caffè museo at the sfmoma for coffee and tea and conversation. it was quite nice and i really wished we could have stayed longer, but i'll have to reserve my excitement for the next time we have a gathering. so all of you style bloggers in the bay area, speak up and send me an email so we can keep in touch about another meet-up! oh, and thanks to local boutique indie industries for the goody bags!

anyway, i got a few shots, but my camera settings were wonky so most of the pictures didn't come out. i don't think she's posted it up yet, but my favorite shots were some candids i got while taking pictures of diane.

black and blue

well, the holidays are approaching. i don't know quite what it is, but i can certainly feel it in the air. my outfits are getting more casual, i'm losing the motivation to get work done, and today i'm blogging from my boyfriend's parents house! we're here to relax and hang out for the evening. my almost-day-off got me thinking: i'm going to be out of town for several days coming up, and i might have to actually pull away from the internet and leave the blog on vacation! it's probably a good thing because now that the semester at school is over, i really do need a good break. and what better way than to enjoy a big thanksgiving dinner with family?

so in fitting with the mood, i dressed very casually today. no frills. and i was entertained by the way it came out: i've got black and blue, highs and lows, silver and gold. almost my entire outfit was vintage found in thrift shops for a few dollars each, except for my fancy pants j brand jeans. and i've had this men's watch forever, but i hardly ever wear it! in fact, i think i've had these boots for 2 years and i never wore them until today. it's kind of amazing how i still struggle to think of an outfit to wear some days when there are so many items in my closet that i haven't even worn yet. but sometimes i'm just waiting for the right opportunity to wear it. does that ever happen to you?

calivintage on queens of vintage

i am so honored to have been chosen as vintage queen no. 47 on queensofvintage.com! i know i just told you so much about myself in my recent calivintage q&a, but you should definitely check out this feature, as i explain how i got into vintage and what it is that i like about vintage so much. i really liked their take on my style:

"Our amazing Vintage Queen number 47 impresses us with her cool thrift style. Proving everyone wrong who thought trend-led fashion can only come from designers and the highstreet, Erin’s outfits are a masterclass in how to make vintage pieces your own in a completely contemporary way."

i'm so flattered! and the site is really great because they feature a lot of incredibly inspiring vintage bloggers who i really admire. so check out the feature and let me know what you think!

and the winner is...

heather b. allison of heather b. allison photography!

heather is the winner of lillian bassman: women from abrams books. and it's so fitting that she also happens to be a photographer herself! i just love it when things work out that beautifully.

and thank you to everyone who entered the contest and became a fan of calivintage on facebook. i hope you stick around because there will be more fun giveaways coming up very soon!

jail birds

on the heels of my last two posts, i decided to do one last prison chic inspiration post. after mentioning the student protests in france during the 60's in this post yesterday and then doing my own little interrogation in this post, i found out that the university of california students at berkeley staged a protest of the uc system fee hike and occupied the wheeler hall. apparently 41 students were arrested. as much as i love california, the budget over here is bad. the uc system will be experiencing a 32% fee increase next fall. i hate to get too political on a personal style blog, but i really do believe education should be accessible to all people, so this is pretty rough.

anyway, thanks to the fantasy of fashion photography, at least i can imagine that this is what it's like in prison. pretty bad-ass, no? i don't have links to the originals, but i can tell you that they are steven meisel for w magazine and that i found them over at cat party.

the interrogation

i just couldn't help myself! i had to get a quick shot of me in the interrogation room for this post. anyway, i was going to split this up into several parts, but decided to just DO THIS THING. so grab yourself a glass of wine and get comfy, because this is going to be really, really long. in fitting with the theme, i decided to add some photos of me trying to pick something to wear. geez, it's like erin unplugged over here today!

what was your first vintage piece of clothing that you fell in love with?
i distinctly remember a red givenchy sweater that i bought at an estate sale with my mom. i think i was in the 7th grade. one day i decided to give it away and then for weeks after, i regretted it. now, i fall in love with vintage all the time, but no longer have a hard time saying goodbye. the thing with vintage (and clothing in general) is the impermanence of it. you rip it or stain it or else it goes out of fashion or you change your taste, so you can only enjoy it while it lasts.

when did you first start taking care in what you wore?
always! when i was a little kid, my daily routine would involve 2 - 3 outfit changes per day, much to my poor mother's consternation. i was often heard complaining that i had nothing to wear whilst sitting in a pile of clothes. um, i basically still do the same thing today...

what's your personal style philosophy?
i dress for myself because i want to look good. i try to find silhouettes that are flattering and i tend to go for simplicity. ideally, i would love the wear a mix of vintage and designer pieces, but i'm not at a place in my life where i can afford designer clothing.

what inspired you to blog???
well, i always cared a lot about getting dressed, so when i discovered sites like chictopia and weardrobe, i just started posting my outfits. there was just this sort of natural progression where blogging just seemed like the next logical step.

who takes your pictures?
my boyfriend. his name is brendan and he does really cool art and writes fiction as well. he will be making his debut on my blog next week!

do you ever get scared when you're posing on your rooftop because i'm terrible with heights and i can barely even go on my friend's fire escape and so i was just wondering if that's an issue for you, because the photos come out looking really cool but it looks nerve-wracking to be up there.
i'm not afraid of heights. in fact, i like climbing, hiking, and biking up to high places very much.

do you always feel confident in your outfit choices or do you ever worry about what others think?
in order to leave the house in what i'm wearing, i do have to feel confident. but sometimes when i go out, i get self-concious if a lot of people stare at me. i just want to look good, i don't want to be gawked at.

there's a lot of cute stuff out there but i don't feel like i have the confidence to wear it. any advice on what i can tell myself so that i just go for it?
sometimes we just allow ourselves and others to define who we are and how we should be. i think it's important to remember that you're allowed to change and do what you want!

where do you shop on the rare occasion that you don't go vintage?
i will shop anywhere. mostly h&m, forever 21, j.crew, urban outfitters, anthropologie, nordstrom, modcloth.com, shopbop.com, rue la la, gilt groupe.

do you have a favorite designer(s)?
chloe, built by wendy, luella, lover, charles anastase, steven alan, wren, a.p.c., rachel comey, 3.1 philip lim, band of outsiders, marc jacobs.

if you had a bunch of money given to you to expand your closet, what would be your first (expensive) purchase?
i would buy a mulberry bayswater. i've always wanted one.

what's the best purchase you ever made?
i have no idea. but i am always most pleased when i buy a cashmere cardigan. i wear them until they are threadbare and get holes because they are so warm and comfy.

what is your favorite color to wear?
i don't have a favorite. i tend to wear a lot of neutrals: black, gray, navy, cream, white, but i would love to add more red and mustard yellow into the mix. or else maybe i'm just craving a hot dog? get it? ketchup and mustard? yeah...

are there any current actors/musicians/celebs who's style you particularly admire?
this always changes, but i am currently watching alexa chung and chloe sevigny very closely. i also like to see what michelle williams and rachel bilson are wearing.

what would be the most unlikely thing we'd ever see you wearing?
um, i probably wouldn't wear pink velour sweatpants with juicy across the butt.

what do you do for a living?
i write my blog, sell vintage clothing on etsy, and go to school full-time.

what are you studying in school?
liberal studies with an emphasis on multiple subject teaching (elementary school) and a minor in art.

what is something that you really want to achieve in the next year?
i want my blog and etsy shop to pay my living expenses. i have a strong feeling that this will happen in the next year, if not the next few months and i am oh so excited because i put a lot of time and effort into it and i think it would only be fair to get a little bit back in return for all that work!

what do you see yourself doing in ten years time?
wow, i have absolutely no idea. i can't answer that. i'm studying to become a teacher, but i'm also really enjoying the whole world of fashion, so i'm leaving it open.

what would be your ideal blue collar job? me, i'd like to try out being a mailperson or train conductor.
i would want to do finish carpentry, like building furniture and other fine woodwork, but that job doesn't exist anymore because they have ikea now.

what are your tattoos of?
i actually did a blog post about my tattoos here. there are even scans of where the original images came from.

if you could get your dream tattoo, what would your design be, influenced by whom/what and who would the ultimate tattoo artist be to do it?
see above. or click here.

what's you favorite movie?
i can never ever choose favorites! this will be a mix of actual movie titles and directors that i love in no particular order: harold and maude, jean-luc godard, mean girls, spike jonze, heathers, woody allen, the dark crystal, federico fellini, the neverending story, alexander payne, welcome to the dollhouse, hayao miyazaki, the graduate, wes anderson. there's too many.

if you were a character in a book or a film (or both!) who would you be?
anna karina in pierrot le fou or audrey hepburn in funny face. i'm not saying i'm like them, but i wish i was! if you're asking who i'm actually like, i don't know. my boyfriend always says i'm like giulietta masina in the nights of cabiria, which is quite a compliment to me!

what's your favourite book?
i'm embarrassingly not very well-read when it comes to fiction. some of my favorite authors are arthur miller, kurt vonnegut, j.d. salinger, jeffrey eugenides.

what kind of music do you listen to?
some favorites in no particular order: the pixies, of montreal, the kinks, xtc, the breeders, cat stevens, tom tom club, the blow, weezer, radiohead, beck, belle and sebastian, the beatles, joni mitchell, air, bjork, submission hold. boy, some of this stuff really dates me.

i always associate a particular piece of music/tune to an era...do you have any favorite tunes, say for 30s, 40s, 50, 60s?
sons of the pioneers, woody guthrie, django reinhardt, thelonius monk, the beatles.

what song would you choose as the soundtrack to your life?
if you want to sing out by cat stevens for the harold and maude soundtrack. that's kind of a joke. i don't know how to answer that one.

what makes you laugh?
the other night i caught that episode of i love lucy where she does the famous mirror routine with harpo marx and i laughed so hard! seriously, that show is funny.

what makes you cry?
i cried the other day for like 10 seconds because i was overwhelmed with holiday plans and finishing up the semester in school. i love the holidays, but it gets stressful sometimes.

why do you love california?
it's where i was born and where 5 generations of my family were born before me. it's absolutely beautiful, with miles and miles of coastline, hot deserts, and majestic mountain ranges, of which you can experience all in one day. and there's really good food, beer, and wine here.

where in the world would you most like to visit?
i haven't had the opportunity to travel yet. the only place i've been outside of the u.s. is belize. i would love to go back to the caribbean, but i'd also like to see mexico, france, and sweden.

if you could only order one thing from a coffee shop for life, what would it be?
i want to say coffee with steamed soy milk, but seeing as i recently quit drinking coffee (we'll see how long that lasts), i have to say tea with steamed soy milk.

if you could go back in time..what year would it be??
i would want to go back to prehistoric times and check out some dinosaurs.

if you could meet or see again anyone past or present, who would it be and why?
like jesus? i dunno... oprah?

boredom is counterrevolutionary

so i thought this might be a silly little precursor to my next post, in which i do a little calivintage q&a. some fashionable photos of lineups and interrogations. this is a series shot by jason brownrigg titled may '68, which i assume is referring to france in may of 1968, when a student political movement, paired with a disgruntled working class staged a revolt, taking over several blocks in downtown paris.

as a side note: this is also pertinent, since just last night i watched tout va bien for the second time. it's a film about a labor strike in a sausage factory in france, starring jane fonda and yves montand. if you've already seen a lot of the other godard films, i would recommend giving it a view. if not, then watch breathless or pierrot le fou first!

anyway, these are some lovely, romantic images that captured my eye when i saw them over at nadinoo's blog, posted as hair inspiration. seriously, these girls have the most amazing hair! and those outfits. dear me. alright, now off to the interrogation room to answer all of those questions you guys asked me!

getting to know me

hah ha. you see what i did there? it's like those lyrics, "getting to know you," but then i replaced the you with me because this blog post is about getting to know me... yeah...

see, yesterday i received a blogger award from quincy of q's daydream (thank you, dear!) and it includes a little questionnaire in which you get the opportunity to answer the questions and post them up on your blog to share a little bit more about you. i started to fill it out and i realized that it would be so much fun if i were to have you, dear readers, ask me some questions, and i'll answer those instead. because the more i think about it, i don't really share all that much with you besides my sartorial decisions, or else i complain about the weather or homework or some such silliness. and i think it's because i don't always know what people would be interested to know. so whether you've been reading my blog for a long time, or if this is your first time here, go ahead, ask away, and then tomorrow i will answer all your questions in another post!

but before i go, i kinda have to talk a little about my dress, too. this here is another piece in my vintage feedsack dress collection. i have absolutely no idea how to date this one because it is handmade, and because feedsack dresses were popular from the 30's right through the 60's, probably even later in rural areas. usually, the clue for me is the style of the dress or else some known history of the original owner, but i can't figure this one out. when did wrap dresses get popular? that might be a clue... anyway, i love love love the print and the teeny tiny rick rack details.

now don't forget to ask me some questions! what do you want to know about the girl behind calivintage???

shop my look

so you probably already know i'm a pretty big fan of weardrobe. i was fortunate enough to meet the lovely people behind the site (suzanne, rich, and jessica of what i wore) in new york this summer during the blogger conference, and it was a blast! so i just have to tell you about their latest developments: weardrobe has teamed up with like.com to offer you a new "shop the look" feature for any of the outfits featured on the site. and i am so pleased to see that two of my outfits are featured right now, so you should definitely check it out!

boy, now i am even more tempted to break the bank with a new pair of over the knee boots.

lillian bassman book giveaway!

oh, i just love a good giveaway, so when abrams books approached me and asked if i'd be interested in hosting a giveaway for this lovely book, i gladly obliged! they have such a beautiful selection of art and fashion books! since i don't yet have my own copy, here is a little synopsis:
At age 92, Lillian Bassman, beloved figure in the pantheon of fashion photographers, is still at work. big red

oh, hm, let's see. right on the heels of that post about red, i've already rediscovered a little something in my closet that just happens to fit in! definitely inspired by the spring 2009 luella collection. it was love at first sight, and i knew that i would need like a million of these for my own personal collection. good thing for me, you can find them for very good prices on ebay, and i usually see them here and in the local antique shops. the only sad part is that i often forget to add a hat, so most of mine are just collecting dust in my closet. you should have seen the little cloud of particles that went flying across my room when i picked this up today!

and can you tell? i was so cold today that i actually wore pants. in one of my recent posts, rebecca of the clothes horse asked me, "how cold could it possibly be over there?" and well, i have an answer. this is the forecast for today:

i should really never complain, right? but seriously, i don't have a point of reference. i only visit the snow on day trips to mountainous areas. how cold does it get where you all live?

ok, enough with the small talk about weather. i'm like a little old lady over here! instead i will tell you a little something about red that i should have included in my last post. when i was a little kid, i used to tell my mom that red was my favorite color because it is the color of ketchup!

wearing:
vintage red velvet bow hat, ebay
cashmere cardigan, j.crew

a pop of color

lately, i've been wearing an awful lot of neutrals. oh who am i kidding? i always wear a lot of neutrals! i've got tons of black, navy, gray, cream, and white with a few browns and florals for good measure. it's not really intentional, it just happens that way. and i'm feeling like i'm in a bit of a rut when it comes to color, so i've found myself a solution: red. it's such a perfect compliment to an otherwise neutral palette. you can make a statement in a nice red coat or add just a touch of interest with a little red bow.

gah, and ever since the wren fall lookbook came out featuring that beautiful red cashmere cardigan, it's all i can think about. too bad i can't drop $300 on a sweater right now, or it would be mine in a heartbeat.

anyway, here are some pieces of inspiration i've been collecting lately to get me in the mood for more of this crimson color.

column a: built by wendy fall 2009, library of congress, jill wilcott, turned out, johanna carlson.

column b: milagr., natalie wood, wren fall 2009, library of congress, source unknown.

and the winner is...

maria confer of lulu letty!

maria is the winner of the art print of her choice from city light photography on etsy.

diana just fell in love with her response as she is a newlywed herself:

"My favorite photo is an old snapshot of my mom and dad when they were teenagers and dating. They both look like such hippies it's awesome. The reason I love this photo is because it shows my parents when they were just beginning their lives together and how even at sixteen and nineteen they were so in love. Thirty six years later and they are still together and still in love. It's magical."

thanks to everyone who shared their lovely answers, it was such a pleasure to read about all of your favorite photographs! see the original entry here. and don't fret! there are more exciting giveaways coming up!

sf bay area style blogger meet up

oh hello there! just thought i would take a moment to tell you about our little san francisco bay area style/fashion blogger meet up this sunday at noon in the yerba buena gardens. if you recall, a while back i had the fortunate opportunity to meet a few bay area stars including helen, the founder of chictopia, liz of late afternoon, jennie of going west, and christina of profresh style. it went over so well that we decided to do another little gathering, this time with a few more bloggers in the mix. it's just a casual get-together, i assume we'll grab some coffee and talk shop, maybe do a little shopping, or else visit some museums. but one thing's for sure, we will all be armed with our cameras!

anyway, i'm not sure who all will be in attendance, but i'll be certain to add people to the list as i find out.

the roster:
calivintage (me, duh)
late afternoon
going west
profresh style
darling darling
candy box
work it, berk

anyway, let me know if you're interested in stopping by! there are a few san francisco bloggers that i really admire who i'm hoping will want to come, but i don't want to be pushy...

update: possibly maybe attending, but no guarantees:

do your homework

ok, today is probably not the best day for me to be focusing energy on the blog. saturday marks the end of the semester for me and i kinda have like 5 papers to write. this is all compounded by the fact that i was sick last weekend and missed a couple of classes, so i'm feeling especially lost about what all of these papers entail. i really should be a better student and start asking questions, but sometimes i get embarrassed when i fall behind and i can't seem to speak up. so bad. in fact, this whole semester has been really bad and i can't wait for it to be over so i can take a little break and re-evaluate my situation; get some focus and energy back before i start again in the spring.

so maybe all this thought about academia has influenced this outfit. geek chic anyone? actually, it's probably just the latest trends taking hold of me. i just can't help myself! i am head over heels for thigh high boots, i'll always love a good blazer, and i'm a california girl, so cut off shorts are required. anyway, i don't have the money to spend on thigh high boots, so i opted for socks pulled over my knees instead. it kinda works, no?

and what is this? can you believe i ventured off my roof and onto the street? i live in an urban area, but my house is in a residential neighborhood. let me just tell you, i don't know how well this outfit will fly over here. i'm not generally shy about taking photos in public or anything, but the maintenance dudes were staring at us and some random duder just decided to stop on the sidewalk and watch us while we took photos. i felt creepy and my boyfriend agreed. we slowly walked away, and i found myself unsure of my sartorial decisions...

vintage fur

you may recall that on saturday, i went for a little shopping trip with jennie of going west. one of the reasons we were checking out the vintage shops was because jennie is looking for a fur coat. now, this subject has been popping up a lot lately for me because i kinda think i really want something fur. to preface, i should tell you that i was vegan for about 8 years of my life. now, while i am no longer vegan and i do wear wool, leather, and cashmere on a daily basis, i still can't seem to shake the image of cruella de vil whenever i think about fur. and i'm sorta ever so slightly afraid of being accosted by one of my former militant vegan friends who would have me know that even faux fur sends the message that it's ok to torture animals. you see?

but you know what? i don't care. i've decided that i want a fur and i don't think i'll feel guilty about browsing the racks in the vintage shops to find one so behold, some of my recent inspiration.

column b: kennedy holmes etsy shop, mara b. on lookbook, anna karina and jean paul belmondo in une femme est une femme, image found via lesfemmes (if you know the photo cred, let me know!), hel looks.

now off to the thrift stores!

one two buckle my shoe

oh hello there! it's just little ol' me on my rooftop again, insisting that i wear a mini skirt every single day even though it's high time that i admit that i need to pull on some wool stockings underneath and throw on some cashmere. in fact, that's just what i'll have to do because i was finally just too cold to wear this today. have i ever told you how much i love cashmere? if j.crew comes out with them again this year, i am buying a cashmere union suit and wearing it every day at home. seriously.

so this is a variation on my last outfit. blouse, mini skirt, patterned tights. this is the way my outfits transition. tomorrow i really want to wear a romantic blouse with high rise skinnies, but i don't yet have the perfect pair. except i have to let you in on this: i ordered a custom pair from indidenim and i'm going to go visit their offices to pick them up some time this week! there will be a blog post about it.

anyway, i'm finding that my style is slowly floating over to the 60's. i think it has everything to do with this haircut. i sometimes fancy myself as a minor character in one of my favorite godard films, brushing past anna karina or jean paul belmondo or jean seberg as they traipse around france. so i pulled out this silly old pair of flats that i think i bought two years ago from juicy couture of all places. random, yes, but 60's inspired they are. though i would much prefer a pair of vintage salvatore ferragamos with the little bows. i have a pair in nude, but have yet to snag a pair in black. wish me luck; maybe i'll get lucky and find some at a thrift store!

let's go shopping

i have to admit something. if i could, i might wear this plaid top with this cashmere cardigan and a pair of skinny jeans every day. something about the colder weather and the end of the semester has got me a little down, and it just makes me feel like being lazy and wearing some glorified version of pajamas all the time. since that isn't quite acceptable, i can always fall back on this simple combination. then if i have to go out, i can swap out the jeans for a little skirt, some patterned tights and heels, and i'm ready to go!

yesterday was just one of those occasions. i got an incredibly late start after an evening of talking with friends and inadvertently drinking almost an entire bottle of wine, and i kinda just rolled out of bed and threw on the ol' uniform to go out to breakfast. then i remembered that i had plans to go shopping in san francisco with the lovely jennie of going west. fortunately, i managed to pull myself together in time to hit a few shops with her and to do a little impromptu photo shoot on the roof before the sun set entirely. jennie took my photos for this post, and isn't it silly how nervous i look? i'm so accustomed to getting photographed by my boyfriend that i get camera shy around almost everyone else.

anyway, it was good times! we went to the vintage shops on haight st. and i found an adorable cream blouse with lace details and a peter pan collar (which i am wearing today) while jennie found the most amazing lace blazer ever. then we went to the north beach/china town area where jennie took me to a cute little vegan restaurant before meeting up with shannon at indie industries, where i got a cool pair of patterned tights, which i am also wearing today. not bad.

defiantly impractical

a.k.a. stickin' it to the man, a.k.a. suffering for fashion? a.k.a. this is gonna be long and a little ranty, a.k.a. procrastination.

you may have noticed that i've been writing a lot of posts where i refer to my habit of continuing to dress in spring and summer attire even though we're in the middle of autumn. i quite liked keiko lynn's response: she said she wears unseasonable colors as her way of stickin' it to the man. i have to agree. i'm pretty sure i believe that my outfit can and will dictate the weather that i want. although i did recently try out some fall colors in this post and enjoyed the look for the day. and even yesterday in this post, i wore an ensemble with deep purple, navy, and olive green with all black accessories. it was pretty comfy.

anyway, i wear what i like (obviously), and sometimes this can be quite impractical, i.e. wearing pastels and shorts in the middle of winter. albeit a very temperate california winter in which i believe 60 degrees is freezing. you get the picture.

but some will ask, "you may look great, but are you comfortable?" ah yes, the old adage that one must suffer for fashion!

i have to say, when i get dressed, i do not keep comfort in mind above all else. i usually look at color, proportion, balance, etc. sometimes i don't check the forecast before i get dressed and i step outside wearing a flouncy mini dress on a particularly windy day. other times, i decide to wear a new pair of heels for a night out on the town without knowing whether or not they will be comfortable because i haven't ever worn them before. and then i end up walking several blocks with blisters already on my feet, searching for the nearest walgreens for bandaids. oops!

is that suffering for fashion? i don't know, but today i am not. this is me, bed head and all, ready for a day of catching up on homework and drinking hot cocoa and complaining about poor little me because i don't feel well and i have too much work to do. it's my lazy thursday outfit. today i am defiantly impractical yet completely comfortable wearing one of my absolute favorite little mexican frocks with the comfiest pair of merino wool wolford stockings and the most comfortable platforms i have ever worn. it's not summer anymore, but i don't mind.

etsy shop update

twin dresses edition! for today's shop update i have two vintage feedsack dresses from the 1940's, both from the same estate, and two vintage girl's dresses from the 1930's, also from the same estate!

native american inspired

i'm not really one to follow trends, but one look that i cannot get over right now is anything and everything with a native american-inspired print! it started with my deep love for pendleton, those richly colored wool flannels with leather patches on the elbows that my grandpa wears to this day! and as a girl who loves vintage, i'm smitten by the colors and patterns on old pendleton blankets and have always dreamed of finding one at a local estate sale, or better yet, a vintage jacket or coat with one of those same prints! my mom did find me a pretty cool cropped jacket at a local thrift shop in tucson which i wore in this post. and since then, i've found the prints popping up in all number of places, and i covet each and every one of them! i couldn't be happier that this trend is back in full swing.

now, this might not exactly qualify as purely native american-inspired, but i just fell in love with the bright and pretty prints of these dresses after i saw a post on refinery 29 about it and i felt that it fit in quite well with this post. the origami folds are a perfect match for the geometric prints! and well, a girl can dream, can't she?

on the left: siri of ringo, have a banana! wearing the penfield oxon navajo satchel which is already out of stock! on the right: april 77 jeans

and last but not least, i just discovered a lovely post by siri wearing this incredible satchel. she also wrote an article about on the fader blog. and can you believe those jeans? i don't think i could ever pull them off, but april 77 does have some pretty amazing hand knit ponchos that i wouldn't mind getting my hands on.

now off to the thrift store for the vintage counterparts to these beautiful pieces! ;)

the cool bus

one of the things about blogging is that we do it from the comfort of our own homes, quietly typing away at our computers and merrily clicking away. it's easy to imagine that all of us bloggers just sit indoors all day sans interaction with another soul, lest we happen to awkwardly pause as strangers pass by while we're snapping self-portraits in front of a tripod. alright, maybe that's just me i'm talking about, i don't know. but what i can say is that we don't get to interact with other bloggers all that often, so you can imagine how happy i am to have had the opportunity to meet the lovely diane of darling darling!

she actually came over last week and we enjoyed a nice afternoon talking shop and drinking a few pumpkin beers in a rose garden by my house, and we kinda sorta didn't take any pictures. but i was lucky enough to get another visit from her today while she got her hair cut by mr. shannon dean, who is also my very own hair stylist. he worked his magic on her asymmetrical cut and she looks just as cute as can be.

afterward, we decided that we wouldn't be good bloggers unless we did a little photo shoot, so shannon took us to a silly spot to see the "cool bus" which has also been featured in this post by his equally awesome girlfriend, jennie of going west. and then i almost had a heart attack after we left and i realized that i had left my camera hanging on a chain link fence near said bus. don't worry, it was still there when we ran back. phew!

so here we are trying to look cool, sharing stories about trains, and nervously laughing in front of the camera.

more pictures from the shoot are at my flickr. all photographs by shannon dean who also furnished us with the bad, bad cigarettes. they're bad.

the modcloth weardrobe dress

so this is a little overdue, but i wanted to mention the totally awesome modcloth weardrobe dress that i received from modcloth for the weardrobe conference. each of the bloggers in attendance was asked to style it up in our own unique way. i did a post about my outfit here.

anyway, modcloth was nice enough to write a cute blog post with a compilation of all the outfits styled by all of the different bloggers, and you can also read a little feature and watch a cute video on the weardrobe site here. i really admire all the different ways the girls styled up the dress. it definitely gives me inspiration for weeks.

and as a little refresher, here is the way i styled up mine. what a blast from the past, i took this photo before i got my new haircut. don't miss it at all!

ok, it's autumn

last night i spent a long time talking to my mom about clothes. this is actually something that we often do because i talk to her all the time and we share a love for getting dressed. she told me that she's in a rut because the seasons have changed and she can't wear her white linen anymore (she lives in tucson) and i told her that i had been defiantly sticking to pastels and summer colors despite the change. so while we were talking, it got me thinking and i started browsing through my clothes in search of something more seasonally appropriate and this is what i came up with.

in all honestly, there really aren't 4 distinct seasons in california anyway. it's very temperate here in the bay area, so we've usually got something like spring most of the time, and then right around now it gets chilly and stays that way for a few months. most of the native plants just go from green to yellow to brown... and anyway, i live in an urban area.

so here we are. i got this beautiful vintage scalloped blazer at a local vintage boutique here in oakland called pretty penny. i actually bought it in the heat of the summer when i was obsessed over everything chloe and told myself that i would just have to patiently wait for the right moment to pull it out. enter this adorable little 60's mini dress i got from clever nettle and i'm in business! and if you have not checked out clever nettle before, you absolutely must. anja is just so lovely and her blog is filled with pretty inspiration. oh, and i'll definitely have to wear this dress again because the jacket is covering up the pretty pleats and ruffles and peter pan collar hiding underneath!

etsy shop update

ok, so technically this is a preview. i have to run a few errands, but when i come back i will be listing these lovelies this afternoon in the calivintage etsy shop! don't forget that i'm putting up 4 news items daily, so even if i don't do a blog post about it, there are new items being added to the shop and getting snatched up! i was actually sad that a few dresses sold before i could show them to you last week.
